Job Description:
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Maintains,
operates, and repairs Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC)
equipment throughout the Jail and House of Correction. Assists in
the operation and maintenance of emergency stand by generators.
Performs related work as required. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under
the direct supervision of the Chief Engineer. DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES Assists in the repair and maintenance of all HVAC
equipment and emergency standby generators at the Jail (NSJ) and
House of Corrections (HOC) as directed. Monitors all the mechanical
rooms and HVAC equipment for proper operation. Makes adjustments to
the Building Management System (BMS) to ensure that all the
buildings’ space temperatures and hot water levels are within
department and statutory guidelines. Responds to emergency
situations and supports other divisions during emergency situations
as requested by the Command staff and/or Chief Engineer. Takes
regularly-scheduled temperature and pressure readings. Monitors and
records temperature and pressure readings. Complies with all
written policies and procedures. Performs housekeeping duties in
all division areas as assigned. Performs other duties and
assignments as may be assigned. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Regular,
punctual and predictable attendance at assigned workplace and post.
Assisting in the repair and maintenance of all HVAC equipment and
emergency standby generators. Monitoring all the mechanical rooms
and HVAC equipment for proper operation. Taking regularly scheduled
temperature and pressure readings and documenting those readings.
Replacing fan belts, air filters, and other related equipment.
Listening for and addressing equipment alarm notifications in a
timely manner; Availability to work any shift and/or mandatory
overtime. Knowledge of, compliance with, and enforcement of
Department, as well as Mechanical Division, policies and
procedures; Compliance with security procedures; Obeying moderately
complex oral and written orders; Communicating orally and in
writing; Dealing calmly and effectively with stressful situations,
including emergencies; and Exercising good judgment. MINIMUM
PHYSICAL REQUIRMENTS Ability to lift 50 pounds overhead Ability to
climb up/down stairs Ability to climb up/down ladders to the
institutions roof Ability to work safely on people lifts at
heights. Ability to do overhead work. Ability to read
instrumentation and document recordings in logbooks and computer
programs. Ability to hear audible alarms. Ability to effectively
communicate with others. Ability to stand and walk for periods of
at least eight (8) hours. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of standard
maintenance procedures for HVAC and Mechanical systems. Experience
working with pipes, machines and equipment with large and small
parts preferred. Experience with safety practices and procedures
for installation, maintenance and repair preferred. Knowledge of
emergency stand by generators preferred. Knowledge of fans, pumps,
valves, air handling units, heat and vent units, heat pumps,
chillers, and all related HVAC systems preferred. Familiarity with
fire pumps and sprinkler systems preferred. Familiarity with
building management systems preferred.
