Bayonet Ocean Vehicles is bridging the gap between open water and the beach with a series of "AUGVs" or Autonomous Underwater Ground Vehicles that can transition from the ocean, in through the surf zone, and onto the beach. This robot platform is unique in the industry because it can operate in regions of the ocean, such as the very shallow water and surf zone environments, where other unmanned platforms cannot. Because of its size, weight, and bottom attachment, it can also carry and operate payloads, such as sampling, coring, and explosive tools, that other vehicles cannot. It is the only platform in the world with such capabilities and it presents powerful tool for operators looking for a stable platform to work in the harshest marine environments.Job DescriptionThe Design Mechanical Engineer will be a critical member of the dynamic, multidisciplinary engineering team at Bayonet. The candidate will be responsible for the design of next generation payloads and crawlers with a focus on advanced mechanism in underwater environments. Projects will begin modest to improve existing core crawler capabilities, specifically recovery sub-systems, controllable masts, and controllable ballasts. A parallel effort will leverage base crawler architecture to developing a more integrated solution for a larger class of crawler that is defined by marketing demand and pushing the performance envelop to bigger water, and more extreme environments.Beyond the next generation larger crawler class, the Design Mechanical Engineer will develop and/or integrate advanced payloads to perform complex tasks using the platform. Examples include, but are not limited to: penetrometer, manipulator, and core sampling.Responsibilities

  • Develop design concept options for crawler platform improvements and payload capabilities.
  • Present options to review team for tradeoff discussions and down selections.
  • Interface closely with Senior design contractors and critical vendors to assure designs are sound and robust.
  • Filter concepts to a single solution that merit progression to a build/test cycle.
  • Lead procurement, work/build up, and assembly of vetted concepts.
  • Manage field testing and demonstration of prototype solutions.
  • Identify design shortfalls and implement corrective actions.
  • Assist in the organization and maintenance of development-focused shop/lab area.
  • Participate in organization/edits of first article, test, and inspection document with Manufacturing team.
  • Support research and vetting of higher performance technologies in the spirit of pushing the performance envelope of both base crawler(s) and enabling payloads.
  • Interface with multi-discipline engineering teams (Electrical Engineering & Software Engineering) to draft and converge on clear and accurate interface control documents (ICD) for prototypes.
  • All other responsibilities as reasonably assigned.Requirements
    • Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering Design.
    • Minimum 5 years' experience, a Maritime Environment with an understanding of material selection and tradeoff is preferred.
    • Highly proficient with Solidworks CAD.
    • Experience with embedded systems.
    • Experience with DC and PWM powered systems.
    • Experience with molds and 3D printing practices.
    • Familiar with hands-on field work with an appreciation for operational tradeoffs and the ability to apply those lessons to design.
    • Experience with technical writing.
    • Thrives in a creative/changing multidisciplinary team environment.
    • A creative, hands-on "build it, break it, fix it" mentality.Preferred Design Strengths
      • Creative design for both a functional and finished look.
      • Design of Mechanisms/latches/solenoids that perform in an ocean/beach environment.
      • Design of moving payloads that interface with Controllable Brushless DC motors.
      • Understanding of fluid dynamic forces, stability in the presence of flow.
